Getting to know Kathleen Martello
I enjoy working with individuals who have experienced difficult childhoods or abusive relationships. Many clients tell me they immediately sense my genuineness, non-judgmental nature, empathy, and care. I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling and am certified in EMDR. With over a decade of experience at a community mental health center, I have been exposed to a wide range of therapeutic approaches and diagnoses, along with training in evidence-based treatment interventions.
Currently, I operate a telehealth practice with a special focus on individuals who have experienced trauma due to childhood abuse, including those who have endured narcissistic parenting and have subsequently found themselves in similar relationships. I share the mental health community's consensus that these issues can lead to codependency, characterized by people-pleasing, a lack of assertiveness, and poor boundaries. Recovery requires changes in thinking and behavior, and sometimes additional interventions, such as medication. I believe that staying informed about leading research is essential, and my interventions will include educational components for my clients.
Before starting my private practice, I worked for many years in case management within behavioral health settings. I also feel a special kinship with those struggling to balance their drive for career success with their desire to enjoy life and relationships. My own career journey has only deepened my passion for forming meaningful connections with others, and I hope to have the opportunity to do so with you.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I use CBT, Bibliotherapy, Psychodynamic and Eclectic approaches to care. My style is person centered and strength based. I believe in setting up a structure with a treatment plan and using evidence based interventions to ensure measurable client outcomes.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
During the initial session, I will ask about your presenting problem, review all of your symptoms and ask background questions, review medications and medical issues. I will also ask about supports and complete an intake with Psychosocial history. I provide an safe intimate space for you to talk, and use reflective listening and open ended questions among other tools. I will then summarize the topic with you and come up with practical short term solutions as we work on longer term overall goals.

Very empathetic but at the same times helps guide you in the right direction without pulling any punches. Has plenty of resources to guide you towards to aid in helping you, help yourself. While in conversation she helps you stay on course and remain on topics that matter most, but at the same time let's you direct the discussion, which is key.
You can tell that your happiness matters to her.

During this time, my child has learned that she is not alone and has the tools to cope with and rise above difficult emotional situations. My child feels safe with Kathy. Having someone for my child to speak freely with and trust is priceless.
