Getting to know Kathryn Berry

Kathryn Berry, MSW, LCSW, is an Illinois-based clinical social worker with multiple years of experience in her field. She completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at Loyola University Chicago, earning her bachelor's degree and her master's degree in social work (MSW) in 2014. Kathryn has worked primarily with adults coping with a wide range of symptoms, including those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. She specializes in the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a treatment that can help improve the lives of anyone experiencing overwhelming emotions. Kathryn acknowledges how much courage it takes to seek therapy. She recognizes that you are the expert on yourself and works with you to create treatment goals tailored to what you want to gain from therapy. She will customize treatment to those goals, which may or may not include DBT skills training. Kathryn considers multiple factors to provide the best therapeutic services possible, including culture, gender identity, trauma history, client strengths, and other aspects of a person that make you unique. Outside of work, Kathryn enjoys playing with her cat, Sophie, going to the movie theater, and watching trains.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client should know that I always address therapy as a collaborative process. I also respect where each person is at in life and that seeking therapy can be scary and/or very new. I always work at the client’s pace from the very beginning.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process for working with clients can vary based on the client’s needs and preferences. For our first session, I complete an initial assessment with clients, asking questions to get to know them and inviting them to ask me questions. I work with the client to develop treatment goals and a plan of action. I explain Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and my role as a DBT-specialist, providing an array of options as to how much we incorporate the DBT material into therapy. My ideal option is for the client to attend psychotherapy twice per week, with one day dedicated to processing and problem-solving, while the other is dedicated to DBT skills training. However, some clients prefer only to meet once per week, in which case we decide how to incorporate DBT into our sessions that way. Regardless, I will always link our work back to making progress towards therapy goals. I constantly help the client identify their strengths and progress in therapy. In addition to DBT, I also utilize other therapeutic interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Internal Family Systems Therapy.
