What should a new client know about working with you?

I try to create a safe and open environment for every client I work with. Everyone's needs are so different. I try to tailor the treatment to needs of the specific client in that moment. So many times, when we enter therapy we do so for one reason and later identify other challenges to address. I think it's important to know that while there may not be a cure or solution to every problem, there can still be hope for better well-being. The path forward may not be linear but it can still provide peace and happiness. And more importantly, we can overcome things that are hard. But asking for help is so scary some times! I think even more so as adults. And certainly, for those experiencing issues related to their reproductive journey, it's even harder to ask for help because it's rarely discussed. It shouldn't be this way. Trying to conceive, infertility struggles, pregnancy loss, birth complications, perinatal health and mental health concerns are issues that are so rarely discussed while so commonly experienced. No matter where someone is in their journey, things can feel really difficult even when tings "seem to be going good". The mixture of emotions that accompany these difficult experiences can feel confusing, frustrating, isolating and even shameful. As someone who has encountered issues along my own journey, I know what wasn't very helpful and what eventually helped. I've shifted my focus for the past 15+ years of working with children, families, and individuals overcoming trauma to focusing on women's/birthing individual's mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer free 15-minute consultations to explore what the client is looking for and if those are goals we will be able to accomplish together. If we do work together, our first session is when I try to collect the majority of information about the concerns we are trying to address. This information is intended to help us find goals and steps to accomplish those goals. This is how we develop a plan for treatment. I see the client as the expert on themself. Only you know what your experiences have been and how they have made you feel. My role becomes that of a support, resource, educator, ally, cheerleader, and of course therapist you can trust with your most difficult emotions. Because it can be difficult to share such private and vulnerable parts of ourself with another individual, I find that the most important fist step to treatment is building a therapeutic rapport that fosters trust, connection, and support. Of course, there are times when individuals seeking my help need a specific treatment or approach I'm not able to provide. In those cases, I work hard to support them with identifying and connecting to those resources immediately. Delaying proper care can delay healing and worsen symptoms.
