Kelly Ghweinem, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
As a queer genderfluid person, I am committed to bringing queer-affirming therapy to individuals across many states. My goal is to mentor clinicians and provide therapy through an antiracist, anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and feminist lens. It is deeply important to me to offer comprehensive psychotherapy with a focus on substance use, interpersonal relationships, and sexuality. I earned my Master's in Social Work from the State University of New York, Buffalo, which has equipped me with the skills to support individuals and couples facing a variety of challenges. Through a trauma-informed lens, I help clients navigate issues such as substance use, relationships, intimacy, sexuality, and marginalized stress. These life stressors affect each person uniquely, so I carefully tailor treatment with a customized, individualized approach. My goal is to provide a warm, compassionate, and safe space for LGBTQAI+ folks to receive comprehensive care. Throughout life, we often develop unhealthy coping and survival mechanisms as a way to protect ourselves. Working together, you will become aware of these patterns and learn new, healthy ways to navigate the world. It is deeply important to me to provide psychotherapy that focuses on aligning core values in one's life. I place the highest value on the therapeutic relationship, developing a unique rapport with each client. Using a collaborative approach and holding the core belief that you are the expert in your own life, together we can heal and transform your world. I encourage you to take the next step in your journey and reach out to me for a brief consultation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you reach out to us, you will be met with warmth and compassion. The first call with the intake coordinator will be aimed at learning what brought you to therapy and your expectations for our working with Velvet Psychotherapy Collective.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapist will use evidence-based assessment tools and interventions to ensure they are providing you with a high level of care. Depending on the goals of the client, they may assign homework but this is dependent on the needs of the client. Progress often happens with work outside of therapy and in between sessions. The clinicians at Velvet Psychotherapy Collective are experienced in Psychodynamic theory, psychoanalytic theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness, emotionally-focused therapy, and motivational interviewing.
