Kelly Runningen, LSW

Psychotherapist
2650 W Montrose Ave, Ste 114, Chicago, IL
As a therapist, I believe it’s important to develop an understanding of the experiences that have shaped your perspective, as well as the values and beliefs that give those experiences meaning. I try to guide each session from a place of empathy, authenticity, and curiosity. From there, we work together to identify your strengths and create opportunities to reflect on relational patterns and ways of coping that may no longer serve you. As a part of this work, we will also take time to consider the context of larger social and systemic forces that impact mental health and well being.

Getting to know Kelly Runningen

As a therapist, I believe it’s important to develop an understanding of the experiences that have shaped your perspective, as well as the values and beliefs that give those experiences meaning. I try to guide each session from a place of empathy, authenticity, and curiosity. From there, we work together to identify your strengths and create opportunities to reflect on relational patterns and ways of coping that may no longer serve you. As a part of this work, we will also take time to consider the context of larger social and systemic forces that impact mental health and well being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My experiences in community mental health, where I’ve worked with people of various ages, cultural backgrounds, and mental health needs, continue to shape my clinical practice. Clients often come to me looking for support with concerns related to depression and suicidal ideation, processing and healing from trauma, navigating life transitions, neurodiversity, and developing tools for coping and self-reflection. Though I work primarily from a relational lens, finding an approach to therapy that feels aligned with your needs, goals, and values is my first priority. This can often look like incorporating ideas from other frameworks like dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), harm reduction, narrative therapy, and expressive art therapies into our work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Prior to becoming a therapist, I studied fine art and worked as a professional seamstress, which inspired me to pursue a career processing and connecting with others. This spirit of creativity and collaboration has become foundational to my perspective and approach as a therapist. Regardless of what’s bringing you into session, I look forward to meeting you with empathy and curiosity each step of the way.
