Getting to know Kelly Woodburn

I view all mental health issues through a non-pathological lens of human attachment. We all have the need to connect with others in a loving, supportive manner. The lens of attachment is heavily researched and concludes all humans need to feel bonded with another from cradle to grave. This bonding isn't optional, it is a fundamental need. Human attachment is the one counseling theory that isn't bias, or discriminatory in nature. Yet, it explains how all humans have needs/wants, and being bonded with others is healthy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide unconditional positive regard, acceptance, and ability to meet you where you are at in real time. I use emotionally focused therapy because this modality is how we do "human" together. I view my case conceptualization through an attachment lens of connection. I attempt to walk alongside you to promote co-regulation in a therapeutic manner.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I focus on how emotions are expressed physically and internally. The first few sessions are about learning your way of expressing your emotions. Your attachment style is explored by understanding how your primary care givers care taking was present/absent in your childhood. After safety and rapport is built, vulnerability is explored collaboratively in an experiential manner.
