Getting to know Kelsey Dorsett

I am a Black, queer therapist dedicated to offering a warm, inclusive, and affirming space where you can feel safe and understood. I work with individuals navigating relationship challenges, whether with family, friends, or romantic partners. I specialize in helping people untangle communication issues, set healthy boundaries, and heal from relational patterns that may be causing distress. I am also affirming of all relationship types, including non-monogamous and polyamorous dynamics, and strive to support clients in finding the relationship styles that align with their values and needs. I hold a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from New York University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico. Using a person-centered approach, I integrate evidence-based practices like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you build meaningful, lasting change. I also offer a psychodynamic approach for those interested in exploring deeper, unconscious patterns that influence how we connect with others. Whether you’re struggling with conflict, self-worth, or seeking to strengthen your relationships, I’m here to provide compassionate support on your journey toward healing and growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Here’s what you can expect when working with me: 1. A Safe and Non-Judgmental Space Your therapy sessions are a safe, confidential, and judgment-free zone. You can be open about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of criticism. I’m here to listen, support, and help you explore what’s going on in your life from a place of understanding and empathy. 2. Collaborative Approach Therapy is a partnership. We will work together to identify your goals and the best path forward. I believe in tailoring the therapeutic process to fit your unique needs and preferences. Your input is essential in shaping our work together. 3. Tailored to Your Needs Everyone’s experience is different, so I approach therapy with flexibility. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, or any other concern, I’ll help you navigate those issues in a way that aligns with your values and personal strengths. I use evidence-based techniques, but I adapt them to suit your individual situation. 4. Confidentiality is Key Anything you share with me is confidential, except in rare cases where I’m required to break confidentiality for safety reasons (for example, if you’re at risk of harm). This ensures that you can speak freely and without fear of your privacy being compromised. 5. Your Pace, Your Process You are in control of the pace and direction of therapy. I’ll guide and support you, but it’s important that you feel comfortable with each step. We’ll explore issues at a pace that feels right for you, and I’m here to help you navigate both the breakthroughs and the challenges that may come up.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first meeting, we’ll get to know each other, talk about why you’ve come to therapy, and discuss what you hope to get out of our work together. This is a time for you to share as much or as little as you’d like. I’ll explain my approach and answer any questions you might have about how we can best work together. Therapy is a process, and it’s one that requires patience, openness, and a commitment to yourself. I’m here to guide you, support you, and offer tools to help you live a more fulfilling life. You’re not alone in this journey, and I’m looking forward to the work we’ll do together. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask—I’m here to support you every step of the way!
