Getting to know Kenji Hammon

Kenji was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. He grew up ski racing, playing water polo, and running whitewater rivers. After attending Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he earned his bachelor's degree, he found himself confronted with substance abuse and mental health issues. Kenji has been in recovery since 2014 and is active in the recovery community and mental health provider system. He attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned his Master’s in Social Work. While at Washington University, he focused his studies on substance abuse treatment and prison reentry programs. Kenji relocated to Salt Lake City in 2019 and has worked at First Step House and the University of Utah. He is passionate about social justice, mental health therapy, and outdoor activities. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you on all of your life and mental health goals. I believe that therapy can be collaborative, personal, intimate, and fun! I love helping people work toward building a healthy and satisfying life through therapy. I come as a person who has accessed the mental health treatment system and believes it should be positive, accessible, and affordable. Ask me about the sliding scale!

What should a new client know about working with you?

The most important thing I can bring to a therapeutic relationship is being 100% authentic. I will always bring myself to a session. I know from research that the therapeutic alliance is the highest determinate of success in therapy. If you feel the alliance is not what you expected I feel it is my duty as a therapist to help you find someone that you will connect with. In my spare time I love to ski, rock climb and run in the mountains!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session I like to get to know you more and organically start talking about goals. I feel that if this process is too structured it feels inauthentic. I find that a client centered approach is best. Therapy should be tailored exactly to what your individual needs are. I like to ask what would be helpful for you! If you are stuck and feel you do not know I can help define what would be helpful for you. Therapy should be collaborative and I want to work with you on an individual, personal approach.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $100 for 50 minutes
Ongoing session: $100 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

I am currently in network with United Health Care. For self pay I do sliding scale between $90-$150 per session depending on income. If you feel like I would be a perfect fit but can't see it working financially reach out to me and we can make something work!
