What should a new client know about working with you?

It is absolutely essential to develop a trusting professional relationship with you. Open discussion will ensure that we are a good fit as client and therapist. My approach is person centered, non-judgmental, compassionate and solution focused. I welcome you as you are and provide a safe zone for you to share your thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams. It is often difficult to take that first step to ask for help and extend trust. You are invited to share what brought you to therapy, what you tried, what was helpful and not helpful. We review your history and bring into focus your strengths, patterns, challenges and insights. I use Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma focused, strength based and other evidenced based approaches. I view you as the expert in your own care and myself as a professional structured guide. We develop a person centered treatment plan with your freely chosen goals and objectives, along with appropriate therapeutic interventions to make progress . I honor your preferences, needs, and abilities. I am respectful of cultural differences. In future sessions, we review progress toward your goals in measured ways. In that way, you can move forward to reduce symptoms and lead a happier life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

(Before the initial session, clients will complete initial basic paperwork, including HIPPA forms, insurance, medical history with medications, questionnaire about symptoms, record release form, a telehealth agreement if applicable, and a services agreement. A client may prefer to discuss certain issues in person. ) The first session is critical in developing a foundation for a strong, trusting therapy relationship. The first session is unique since the client and therapist get to know each other and how to proceed. You will be asked about what brought you to therapy, your symptoms, what is not going well (and what is), and your childhood and adult history including family history, relationships, education, current living situation and career. The questions are non-judgmental, mostly open ended and therapist replies are used to accurately reflect , clarify and develop a comprehensive understanding of the client's perspective. This information will be used to form a diagnostic impression as part of a psycho-social history and treatment plan early on in treatment. The client and therapist reach an agreement about the length of treatment, methods used and patient confidentiality.
