Getting to know Kenneth Hollander

I am a Nationally Certified and New York State Licensed Psychoanalyst and a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. A Hudson Valley resident for the past ten years, I have a sizable NYC practice via Telehealth and see Hudson Valley clients in person in my Kingston office. I am also licensed to see Vermont clients via telehealth. I hold a Certificate in Gestalt Therapy from Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy, New York. My Gestalt therapy training has taught me to recognize and address the myriad of relationship and personal issues that we all encounter, and ways to work through these to maximize our happiness and life satisfaction. I seek to help clients increase and enhance their awareness of how they live in the world, moment to moment, leading to increased insight and new choices. In my Imago Relationship work, couples learn a new way to communicate with each other, learning to listen, validate, and empathize rather than defend against and attack; the goal is to enhance connection by learning a new and better way to communicate. I earned my Master's in Business Administration from Arizona State University and my Bachelor's degree from the City University of New York.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You are in a relationship and find that you and your partner have an ongoing struggle which doesn't seem to resolve. You may not feel heard or seen by your partner - or they by you. Perhaps your reactivity is out-of-proportion to what's actually going on in the present. It's likely that you and your partner are working on the same or similar childhood wounds, but from an opposite perspective... one of you tends to withdraw and stew, keeping feelings to yourself, while the other tends to explode, wants to resolve things now, can't wait. This is the Minimizer & Maximizer phenomenon. Neither is wrong... you have different styles which you learned early on... your adaptation. In Imago Relationship Therapy, you will learn how to speak to each other and how to listen, understanding your different respective approaches. As an individual, you may be experiencing anxiety and depression; a life, relationship or career transition, difficulty at work, retirement and its challenges. You may be wrestling with sexual identity questions, or other issues of identity that may have emerged, such as those for adult adoptees. I work with a broad spectrum of clients, including heterosexual as well as LGBTQ individuals and couples.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

With individual clients I work in the gestalt modality; it is present-focused and relational. We will check in with your embodied experience from time to time, which can offer clues as to what you are feeling and where you may be holding emotions and energy. With couples, I work in the Imago modality. We use a structured dialogue technique to enhance connection through better listening which improves communication, increased awareness and acceptance of differentiation (You are not your partner and they are not you,) and ultimately an ability to validate your partner's perspective even when you may not agree with it.

Ken is a creative problem solver and has helped us navigate through difficult times. He is an insightful, sensitive and perceptive therapist. We highly recommend him for either individual or couples psychotherapy.
Ken helped me process through a difficult time with pregnancy loss and processing unresolved issues. He gave me the necessary skills to better be able to handle things on my own. He is a genuine, supportive, and personable therapist.
Ken was great therapist to work with. I was feeling a lot of sadness and situational depression with a lot of overwhelming life changes happening all at once. He was very warm and friendly, and easy to open up to. He allowed me the space to talk out my feelings yet also provided me with solutions to work through them and provided me with the skills to keep my mental health in good check. Thanks Ken!
Ken is great to work with. From the beginning he established a welcoming, positive and sympathetic atmosphere that made it easy to talk with him about anything. He has the unique abilities of getting to the heart of the matter quickly, listening without judgement and making relevant suggestions to resolve very personal issues. I would not hesitate to recommend him to my closest friends and family.
Ken is an empathetic and attuned therapist. Through careful listening, he was able to unpack the issues my spouse and I were dealing with, and skillfully guide us to see which of these we could shift and how we might approach those, and which issues we had to acknowledge were not changeable, at least for the time being. He helped us clarify and prioritize our relationship challenges, and provided fresh perspectives on ways forward.
Ken is a great psychoanalyst who knows what he can provide his clients and what he is doing. I appreciate his passion, guidance, and effort.
Ken is empathetic, kind, insightful and a really good listener. He was my therapist for three years, and I can’t overstate how much he helped me heal. He helped me see the patterns I was repeating, like not being kind to myself and seeing myself as unworthy of love and gentleness, something I was taught in childhood. He didn’t let me off the hook when I was slipping, but even then did so with kindness. Ken is an incredible therapist who genuinely loves what he does and cares about his clients. I’d recommend him to anyone who asked!
My husband and I are so grateful for Ken! We credit him for helping us save our marriage. He made us feel comfortable opening up and bringing our issues to light, while giving us the tools to communicate better. We highly recommend him.
Ken Hollander is a great therapist. He is warm and gentle and one gets the impression that he really cares. He asks for feedback and is otherwise very good at communicating practical matters such as payments and scheduling. I have learned a lot from Ken as he is quite knowledgeable in his field and knows of many tools available for successful therapy. I would highly recommend Ken for anyone looking to take a serious approach to their emotional wellbeing.
