Kerri Gavin, LCSW

Psychotherapist
CA
I have been working in the mental health field for over 30 years. My approach is to actively listen, validate feelings, provide positive affirmations, levity for some who want and need it, compassion, patience, and understanding. I like to bring focus to things in life that one needs to work on or resources needed, helping others learn how to be empowered in their lives. My background includes working in a group home for adolescent boys in 1990 while attending school to become a Licensed Psychiatric Technician. I have worked in a halfway house transitioning people from locked facilities to their new placements, teaching skills and daily living activities since they had been locked up and everything was done for them, so they could succeed in society. I also worked in a home for HIV/AIDS clients, where they could choose to die at home. After obtaining my Psychiatric Technician license, I was hired at Sonoma County Mental Health Services on the inpatient crisis unit, working with people from all walks of life. I was injured on the job, and the county paid for three semesters of retraining (I paid for the first semester). This retraining agreement allowed me to earn my Master’s in Social Work from California State University, Sacramento. I have experience working with youth in a clean and sober school, in group therapy, and providing educational groups to children who have been reprimanded by the court. I was hired at Sonoma Developmental Center, where I worked for 15 years with people who had intellectual disabilities and did not need institutional living, helping them move into surrounding communities as part of a plan to provide the least restrictive environment. I also provided counseling to some clients who could engage in it. After earning my hours to become Licensed and helping with the closure of the Developmental Center, I worked in a subacute residence with people on life support.
