Getting to know Kerri Gunn

Hi, it is amazing that you are at this point—considering taking care of yourself and hoping for the right fit. I also have experience with the foster care system, criminal justice system, insurance, and medical co-morbidities. My hope is to support my clients in how they see themselves—to recognize that what you need has always been there. What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a variety of techniques to reframe difficult life experiences, identify self limiting beliefs, add in new information that supports new actions. I am trained in rational emotive behavior therapy or REBT and other modalities. I use a wide variety of homework if you choose to try such as short writing exercises, Ted Talks and books. I know sharing intimate details can be unnerving, but most people tell me their life story within minutes of meeting me. I think its because they know I want to hear their stories and I care. I believe no matter what you can create a version of yourself that you can love. The first step is just to start talking and I will lead the way to your new future. The process of therapy is meant to change the way you see yourself. To connect to your emotions and to understand why you feel this way. There is a truth in them, and you’re not crazy. You are not overly emotional. I would bet that to the degree you feel wounded is related to your experience. I will be there to explore those emotions in a safe space. Show you how strong you are for getting to this point. To remind you that you chose to support yourself, and you can take it to the next level. Your emotions are what you’re wrestling with but they should be a way to learn about yourself. They are your compass in navigating the world. The only way out is through. Discovering your emotions and learning why they haunt you will make a difference. Let’s begin to process what you’re avoiding and what is overwhelming you. Let’s find your confidence, which will allow you to feel like you can take life on. Let's create a way for you to manage your life in a way that is simple and effective.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

At intake we will discuss what you would like to work on in therapy. Take a history of family, health, work, love, culture, supports, risk factors and needs. We will review the basics of how therapy works, confidentiality, safety and consent. I will discuss treatment options to include what style of therapy and what modalities or types of therapy you would like to try. We will create a treatment plan and check in at least every couple of sessions to make sure that your experience is meeting your needs. I encourage feedback about your experience so that I can continue to improve your treatment.
