What should a new client know about working with you?

Born and raised in South Florida, I began my studies in Social Work at Florida Atlantic University and commenced my studies in 2001 with my Masters Degree. During my career, my clinical focus has been primarily been with adolescents and their families as well geriatric populations and the needs that arise as we age. I have had the opportunity to serve as a field instructor to emerging social work students as well as provide state supervision graduates seeking clinical licensure following completion of their Master’s degrees. I have also had the opportunity to work as an adjunct instructor at Florida Atlantic University teaching a variety of Social Work courses. I am a client advocate and I have 15+ years working in managed care and evaluating the how, why, what hasn’t been done, and what can we do differently to assist clients in all matters of mental health and substance abuse. I have a keen eye for medical co-morbities that may adversely influence mental wellness as well as medications that may or may not be effective. My clinical style is that of focusing on my client’s primary needs and together evaluating what work is necessary and realistic to obtain their goals. These goals could be to reduce depression/anxiety, improve low self-esteem, improve relationships with family members or learn effective communication skills. I tend to be short term oriented and task driven based on your what your anticipated outcome looks like. I understand that change is uncomfortable but yet, when we are feeling that discomfort, we are growing and changing. That discomfort is evidence that you are working and improving. I am here to support my clients through these transitions. I have a positive attitude and focus on what’s working and the successes achieved rather than dwelling in what’s wrong or not working. I do expect my clients to put in the work as it is the change they seek that belongs to them, not anyone else.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Going through therapy with a therapist can be a very beneficial experience for individuals who want to work through their mental health challenges and improve their overall well-being. Here are some steps you can take to make the most of your therapy experience: - Find the right therapist: The first step is to find a therapist who is a good fit for you. Look for someone who specializes in the type of issues you want to address and whose style matches your preferences. I hope I can be that person for you. - Set clear goals: It's important to have clear goals for therapy so that you and I are on the same page. In our first session, we will discuss your goals and work together to create a treatment plan that outlines the steps you will take to achieve those goals. - Try to be open and honest with me about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am here to help you, and I can only do so if I have a clear understanding of what's going on. - Trust the process: Therapy can be a long process, and it's important to trust that the work you're doing with me will pay off in the end. It's also important to be patient and not expect instant results. - Practice self-care: In addition to attending therapy sessions, it's important to practice self-care on a regular basis. This may include activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones. - Keep an open mind: Finally, it's important to keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. As your therapist, I may suggest different techniques or approaches that you haven't tried before, and it's important to be receptive to these suggestions. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process between you and me, so be sure to communicate your thoughts and concerns along the way. With the right mindset and a willingness to work, therapy can be a transformative experience that helps you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life.
