Getting to know Kirby Tepper

KIRBY TEPPER, LMFT, is a licensed psychotherapist witha gentle talk therapy style. With many years of mental health experience Kirby strives to understand his clients' individual needs and how best to help them in a way that fits with their personality. Rather than sitting quietly and staring blankly during sessions, Kirby asks many questions that help uncover answers that'll lead to real change. Kirby's experience has helped many people cope with codependency or enmeshment in relationships, low self-esteem, shame, high anxiety, and loss. He prefers focusing on solutions. He has helped many families find resolutions for unresolved family conflicts, helped individuals find tools for handling anxiety, conflict resolution. career questions and improved communication with spouses, partners, co-workers, and family members. Two Niche Areas Kirby has years of clinical experience work with men to help define their roles in a changing world. The cliché often holds that men don't open up easily and prefer to be analytical. They may feel they need a mental health expert who understands men's unique challenges. and find a vocabulary for their feelings that fits their style and personality. Sex, sex addiciont, compulsive use of porn, shame, erectile dysfunction and intimacy issues are core areas for me. . Addressing the full range of factors impacting mental health is essential to men's self-esteem. Kirby has deep background in working with professionals in television, film, and music — actors, writers, directors, band/studio/touring musician, sand producers — and understands the identity, performance, and career-cycle pressures unique to those fields. BEFORE YOU BOOK: My practice is full-fee and out-of-network, and many of my clients carry strong PPO plans that reimburse a significant portion of the cost. With these plans, your out-of-pocket fee can be reasonable and affodable.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm dedicated to providing interactive and judgment-free sessions. Our time is spent understanding your current challenges, how they're impacted by your past history, and what concrete steps will work best to help walk through anxiety, conflict, depression, self-esteem, career, and interralational issues. I'm pretty sensitive to how culture, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, history of abuse, addiction, and chronic health issues affect your worldview, always trying to learn how and why you feel and operate as you do. Rather than tell you what to do, I prefer to lead you to discover changes and solutions that fit you. I ask questions; sessions are interactive. I think my job should actually be to become obsolete, that you feel comfortable enough to say you no longer need to have sessions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typical sessions are 50 minutes, interactive. I like the client to start with whatever subject they want. We'll flow from there. Themes usually start to emerge as the session moves forward. I try to help clients see how the current session's themes are related to their general issues and concerns, and how they represent underlyhing premises and feelings that cause maladaptive thoughts and behaviors. Sometimes clients just need to vent or just be able to be sad or frightened and be listened to.

In-network insurances

It’s common for mental health providers to be out-of-network. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network coverage, so you may get partially reimbursed. Learn more

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $100 for 30 minutes
Ongoing session: $250 for 50 minutes
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU HOPE TO USE INSURANCE PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING AN INTAKE APPOINTMENT. Thanks very much. I'm an out-of-network provider, so your in-network co-pay doesn't apply. However, I do take partial payment from insurance, as most insurance companies have out-of-network benefits so that you aren't limited to in-network therapists. If you have a Platinum, Silver, or Gold PPO plan, your insurance will very likely pay a portion of your session fee. If your deductible is $1000 or less and you have a PPO plan, your insurance could pay anywhere from $100 toward the full fee. Before your deductible is met: full fee of $250. After your deductible is met: Your out-of-pocket payment (copay) will be the balance between that amount and my current full fee of $250. Note that if your insurance pays nothing, you'll be charged the full fee. Hope that makes sense. I know it's frustrating to deal with insurance and fees, and I'm happy to go over this with you before you decide to have an intake or to go forward with sessions. Thanks, Kirby
