Getting to know Kirk Shelton

My practice is entirely Telehealth at this time. I can work with anyone within Missouri, Kansas, and Florida via Telehealth. I hold a Master’s in Psychotherapy from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, which informs my compassionate and effective approach to care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Strengths-based and person-centered. I believe you are the expert on yourself, and I want to help tap into yourself for healing. Many things in our lives can lead us to reach out when we feel the need for support or help working through challenges. Many of my clients work on trauma and pain they have carried for a long time. I help my clients reorganize patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting in order to adapt to their present reality and to release "the old stuff". I became a therapist because I knew what it felt like to be preoccupied by something crying out to be "fixed" or "solved". I enjoy working with clients to collaboratively address their challenges. I am myself in session, and I enjoy helping my clients unravel layers that sometimes make it difficult to get in touch with themselves. The therapeutic process begins before I ever speak with a client, and it often takes some courage to reach out. If you are considering therapy, schedule a visit.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I practice from a strengths-based, person-centered approach, collaborating to work toward my clients' growth and healing. I emphasize resilience, self-leadership, and compassion. The familiar ways of dealing with life's challenges may no longer be working, but together we can tap into your natural ability to adapt and change. I welcome clients from a variety of ages and stages, though I particularly focus on older adolescents, young adults, and adults. My "home base" is a person-centered approach, though I make frequent use of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) techniques. I am credentialed for EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based practice to heal from trauma, and use it when appropriate.
