Psychotherapist

Sometimes you know a relationship, thought pattern, or behavior isn’t healthy for you, but knowing that doesn’t always make it easier to change. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, attachment concerns, and the lasting impact of growing up with emotionally immature parents. Many of my clients learned early to put other people’s needs first, manage the emotions of those around them, or become the “responsible one.” As adults, they may struggle with guilt, people-pleasing, setting boundaries, trusting their own feelings, or finding themselves in relationships where their emotional needs continue to go unmet. As a bilingual therapist, I provide therapy in English and Spanish and welcome conversations about culture, family, identity, and the expectations we carry from our upbringing. Therapy can be a space to understand where these patterns began, reconnect with yourself, and begin creating relationships that feel healthier and more fulfilling.

Getting to know Kissy Avila Calderon

What should a new client know about working with you?

You don’t have to come to therapy already knowing exactly what is wrong or what you want to change. We can begin with what is happening in your life right now and gradually explore the experiences and relationships that shaped you. I have a particular interest in working with adults who grew up with emotionally immature parents and are beginning to recognize how those early experiences affect their relationships, boundaries, self-worth, and emotional needs today. My style is warm, collaborative, and reflective. I will support you while also gently challenging patterns that may no longer be serving you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We start with a conversation. I want to understand what brings you to therapy, what you are experiencing now, and what you hope will feel different. From there, we explore patterns in your emotions, relationships, and past experiences, including family dynamics that may still influence how you see yourself and relate to others. For adults raised by emotionally immature parents, this may include exploring people-pleasing, guilt, difficulty setting boundaries, fear of disappointing others, or feeling responsible for other people’s emotions. My approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and influenced by psychodynamic and attachment-based therapy. Together, we work toward greater self-awareness, healthier boundaries, stronger relationships, and a life that feels more connected to who you are; not simply who you learned you needed to be.
