Hi! I am currently working with Aspen Counseling Services in Watertown, SD, and online with Rula. I have lived in multiple places across the United States and even Europe (for a very brief moment). So, my childhood and adult experiences are quite unique. I prefer to think that this gives me an enriched perspective that I enjoy bringing into my practice. When I am not spending time with my family, I very much enjoy jumping in on sand or indoor volleyball tournaments, and researching natural health remedies, detox protocols, and tools for my therapy practice. I believe that healing should be holistic and collaborative. I enjoy providing biopsychosocial tools to help my clients achieve their goals. I also appreciate the strong role that faith can play in the process of growth, healing, and recovery. I enjoy getting to know and working with my clients to determine the best path for their journey. I strongly believe in attachment theory and will typically work from an attachment lens.

Getting to know Korina Brockhaus

What should a new client know about working with you?

I enjoy working with couples who may be struggling with marital dissatisfaction, communication, or parenting; teens and adults who may have experienced adverse life events, life transitions, loss, trauma, abuse, divorce, childhood trauma, or sexual trauma. These things can often contribute to struggles with grief, emotional dysregulation, panic attacks, distress tolerance, verbal communication skills, interpersonal social skills, relational distress, and more generalized life management skills, which I believe can all be treated through the therapeutic process. I love supporting people and providing them with useful tools as they heal from these wounds. During treatment, I like to work toward understanding the experience of my clients. It is important to me that the client knows I approach therapy with an unconditional positive regard. I believe that people have perfectly good reasons for developing patterns of behavior. Often, these were once useful. However, these same skills/behaviors they have developed can quite often turn into their own oppressive prisons. I will often utilize my own experience to connect and provide guidance if it is useful to the client.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Chapman University in Orange, CA in 2010. I then obtained a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from SDSM&T in Rapid City, SD in 2012. I worked for just under a decade in the engineering and management industries before deciding to obtain a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University in Minnesota, graduating in 2022. I found that the parts of my job I enjoyed most were helping my employees through difficult experiences and getting them to the places they really wanted to be in life. I find this to be extremely fulfilling work. During the first few sessions, we will address the client's goals. This will be achieved in a collaborative way. It will largely depend on what the client wants in their life. We will work to understand what achieving those goals looks like so that we can make a plan together that best fits into the client's life. During our first session, I will ask you about your physical health, childhood history, health history, and present life. The better I can get to know you and what your experience of life and relationships have been, the better I will know what types of interventions will likely be most helpful for you.
