Getting to know Kristen Decker

As a mental health counselor with a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University, my primary goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for my clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am dedicated to fostering a therapeutic relationship built on trust, empathy, and non-judgment. I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and healing, and I am committed to helping my clients tap into their inner strengths and resources to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. I utilize a person-centered approach, tailoring my therapeutic techniques and interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual or family I work with. I am trained in various therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, trauma-informed therapy, Exposure Response Prevention, and mindfulness-based approaches. I believe in the importance of collaboration and actively involving my clients in the therapeutic process. Together, we will identify and address the underlying causes of distress, develop coping strategies, and work towards positive change. Part of my role as a mental health counselor is to provide psychoeducation and help my clients gain a better understanding of their mental health conditions, symptoms, and triggers. I value the power of education and believe that when armed with knowledge, individuals can make informed decisions about their treatment and self-care. I am here to support you on your journey towards improved mental health and well-being. I invite you to reach out and schedule a session so we can work together towards a happier, healthier you. Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and you deserve to live a life that is fulfilling and meaningful.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Mental Health Counselor my therapeutic approach combines a client-centered focus, an integrative approach, and cultural sensitivity to create a safe and effective therapeutic experience. I prioritize building a strong therapeutic alliance based on trust, empathy, and unconditional positive regard, as I believe this is the foundation for successful therapy. By creating a warm and non-judgmental environment, I encourage clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely, knowing they will be heard, validated, and supported. I believe that clients are the experts on themselves and their experiences; therefore, I value their expertise and incorporate their perspectives and preferences into the therapy process.. By incorporating the client's unique needs and goals, we can create a personalized approach that promotes growth, healing, and the achievement of their desired outcomes. I utilize various therapeutic modalities to address the diverse needs of my clients. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one modality I often employ, as it focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to distress. Additionally, I integrate psychodynamic therapy, which delves into past experiences and unconscious processes to understand present thoughts and behaviors. Mindfulness-based techniques, solution-focused therapy, and other approaches are also incorporated into my practice. I tailor the therapy to each client's unique circumstances, utilizing the most appropriate modalities to address their specific needs and goals

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During therapy sessions, I take a holistic approach that recognizes the uniqueness of each individual. I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to express yourself and explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. I will actively listen to your concerns, thoughts, and feelings and offer constructive feedback and insights to promote self-awareness and personal growth. In our sessions, I may incorporate different therapeutic techniques and interventions based on your needs and preferences. This may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, solution-focused therapy, and others. The selection of therapy modalities will be determined through our collaborative discussions and based on what research and clinical experience suggest will be most effective for your particular situation. As therapy progresses, we will regularly review your progress and make any necessary adjustments to our treatment plan. Setbacks and challenges may arise along the way, and together we will work through these obstacles and continue moving forward towards your desired outcomes. Confidentiality is of utmost importance to me, and I adhere to strict ethical guidelines to ensure your personal information remains secure. However, there are certain situations where confidentiality may need to be breached in order to protect your safety or the safety of others. I will discuss these exceptions with you during our first session. My goal is to provide you with a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship where you feel heard, understood, and empowered. I am committed to assisting you in developing the necessary skills and resources to navigate life's challenges and improve your overall well-being. Therapy can be a transformative journey, and I am honored to be a part of yours.

I have been seeing Kristen Decker for therapy for the past three years, and I cannot recommend her enough. Kristen is a compassionate and skilled therapist who truly cares about her patients' well-being. Her guidance and support have been invaluable in my personal growth and mental health journey. She creates a safe and nonjudgmental space where I feel comfortable discussing big and small things from my life and day to day. Kristen's expertise and genuine empathy have made a significant positive impact on my life. I am grateful to have found such a dedicated and compassionate therapist like Kristen and look forward to continuing our sessions together.
Kristen's a great therapist, funny, and fairly informal which I really appreciate – I don't want to feel like I'm in a board meeting when I'm talking about personal issues. She makes really insightful observations into my motivations and behavioral patterns and shares them in a friendly way. It's pretty common that I feel a weight lift from my shoulders either during or by the end of a session (literally my chest feels more open and lighter). Her background in CBT is really strong. I enjoy and look forward to our conversations.
For close to three years now I have been visiting Dr. Decker and it have been so enlightening. Her warmth and understanding all while challenging me has helped me immensely in my personal growth. I can’t recommend her enough!
