Getting to know Kristen Hawkinson

I am an LPC licensed in Oregon with over 9 years of experience in clinical practice. I specialize in working with teens and adults that may feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve them or simply want support in navigating the inevitable complexities of life. Whether you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, ADHD, or major life transitions, my goal is to help you connect with your strengths and move toward a more fulfilling and authentic life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice an integrative approach, primarily grounded in humanistic and psychoanalytic philosophies but also implementing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other cognitive-behavioral techniques. Therapy is not one size fits all; I work collaboratively with clients and tailor my therapeutic approaches based on each individual client’s unique needs and changing circumstances. Essential to effective counseling is the therapeutic alliance and I work to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where trust can be built and fostered. I honor autonomy and my goal is not to “fix” problems; my part is to guide client’s in gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and developing skills to optimize well-being while providing support and unconditional acceptance.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are usually focused on getting a clear picture of what has been happening in your life, what brought you to counseling, and what you would like to be different. I will ask questions about your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, strengths, coping strategies, and other parts of your life that may help us understand the bigger picture. From there, we will develop goals together rather than following a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. A typical session may include checking in on what has happened since we last met, exploring a current challenge or recurring pattern, and identifying thoughts, emotions, behaviors, or experiences that may be contributing to it. Depending on what you need, we may work on increasing self-awareness, challenging unhelpful ways of thinking, developing coping skills for overwhelming moments, practicing new ways of responding, or exploring how past experiences influence the present. I generally view counseling as something we do together. I may offer observations, questions, strategies, or a different perspective, but I also want your feedback about what is and is not working so that our work remains relevant to you.
