What should a new client know about working with you?

In my practice, I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness. I teach psychoeducation to help individuals, families, and couples understand why they may be reacting the way they are and how certain behaviors are keeping them stuck. We explore core values of the individual or couples to understand where the tension is coming from and use these values to guide how the client(s) want to live their life. I work on self-awareness with clients to understand the core issue or fear they have and make a connection of why they are using the dysfunctional behavior to cope. We spend a lot of time talking about acceptance, learning what it really is, and practice to get better at it. I incorporate mindfulness-based exercises to help individuals get to a calmer state of mind. My approach is to support clients in exploring meaning, values, and inner strengths as part of the healing process, while also implementing meaningful behavior changes. I use a strengths-based lens to help clients cultivate a healthier relationship with themselves and with others. Spirituality can be thoughtfully integrated into our work when it is meaningful to the client and always in a way that honors their personal beliefs and values. My goal is to support clients in engaging more fully in a life they enjoy and find fulfilling.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Starting therapy is an important step, and the first phase of our work together is focused on building a strong, supportive foundation. I begin by meeting you where you are — taking time to understand your experiences, concerns, and what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life. We can determine at the beginning of therapy if you have a timeline or idea of how many sessions you are able to commit to therapy. I want this to work for you. Early sessions often involve thoughtful questions and open conversations. My role is to listen carefully, learn about you, and gain insight into your unique perspective. This process helps us establish a trusting relationship, which is an essential part of meaningful and effective therapy. I strive to provide a safe, open, and nonjudgmental environment where you can share freely and feel heard. You set the pace, and there is no pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready. Together, we will explore your strengths, values, and goals, while identifying areas where you would like support or change. Therapy is a collaborative process. As we get to know each other, we will work together to develop a plan that aligns with your needs and builds on your strengths, helping you move toward the growth and outcomes that matter most to you.
