To me, therapy is all about helping people build the life they want to live and removing the barriers that are making it hard for them to get there. For a lot of us, past experiences have taught us the wrong lessons in how to engage in relationships and how to handle conflicts. Therapy is a chance to reframe those past experiences and make more informed choices on how to move into the future that we want for ourselves. My approach As a counselor, my main focus is on helping you reach whatever goals you want to set for the counseling. If anxiety or depression are holding you back, I want to help you recognize how and why they're holding you back and how to manage them better. Sometimes that involves understanding how your thoughts and beliefs impact your actions (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Sometimes it is more about accepting your thoughts and feelings but not letting them drive the bus when they are making it harder for you in the moment (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Each client is different, so we'll use the approach that works best for you. My focus I've worked with all ages and all kinds of issues in my 25+ years of being a counselor. What I've found in the last few years is that I have a real passion for working with anxiety, depression, and trauma at any age. With younger children, that may look like working with them through play and discussion to help them understand their struggles in age-appropriate terms, while also working with their parents on how to best support them. For adults, it may look like helping clients understand how their thoughts, feelings, and experiences impact their brains and how to make changes that will last in the long-term.
