Kristina Cilento, LMSW

Psychotherapist
NY
Welcome! :) I am a Brooklyn-based psychotherapist and expressive arts therapist, currently accepting new virtual clients via telehealth throughout New York State. I specialize in helping adults and adolescents navigate difficulties with mood, relationships, self-esteem, trauma, grief, and life transitions. I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, completed a Music Therapy Fellowship at UCLA Health, and earned my Bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music. My style is warm, grounded, affirming, and collaborative. I view my role as a compassionate and informed partner in your journey and believe therapy should be a soft place to land during your week—where you feel uplifted and understood. I work well with sensitive, creative, and artistically inclined individuals who feel and think deeply and are inherently attuned to the world around them. I balance sharing feedback and tools while ensuring you define how your treatment unfolds and feel supported every step of the way. In our sessions, I’ll use a holistic blend of techniques based on your strengths to thoughtfully cater to your needs, encourage deeper processing, and bring movement to stuck areas. It’s truly an honor to learn people’s stories and to see my clients reclaim more authority over their emotions and needs in therapy. I’m excited to get to know you and for the work we could do together.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I conduct therapy from a relational psychodynamic lens and utilize techniques from Schema therapy, expressive arts therapy, CBT and DBT. As someone who has been equally drawn to psychology, the social sciences and the arts, my therapy approach has come from my own lived experiences and personal exploration of human behavior and "why we are the way that we are," as well as how we move towards healing. I've come to view my own experiences, sensitivity, deep feeling and creativity as a gift that allows me to hold space for others, and I'm passionate about helping my clients see themselves in new and more loving ways.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work with people to identify beliefs and patterns stemming from childhood, that might still be holding them back from finding the unwavering self-compassion and wellbeing they deserve. Therapy can be helpful for building understanding from multiple perspectives including how inter-generational, systemic, societal and cultural factors influence our lives. I aim to bring curiosity and non-judgement to sessions and my top priority is that my clients feel accepted and safe to come as they are.
