Psychotherapist

Do you feel caught between who you are and who your family, culture, or others expect you to be? Maybe you’re struggling with anxiety, guilt, relationships, family expectations, or belonging—or noticing that past experiences continue to shape how you see yourself and connect with others. I’m Laura Lin, a bilingual Mandarin-English psychotherapist working with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, identity concerns, family and relationship challenges, and life transitions. I especially support immigrants and children of immigrants, Asian and BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ clients, and those navigating multicultural identities and intergenerational concerns. My approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, relational, and collaborative. Together, we’ll explore the experiences and patterns shaping your life while creating space for greater self-understanding, healthier relationships, and meaningful change. I believe growth does not require you to reject your culture, family, or values. Therapy can help you honor what matters to you while making room for your own needs, boundaries, and evolving sense of self. I earned my Master of Social Work from Columbia University with a concentration in Advanced Clinical Practice.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You do not need to come to therapy knowing exactly what is wrong, what you want to change, or how to put your experiences into words. Part of our work together can be making sense of experiences, emotions, and patterns that may have been difficult to understand or name on your own. My style is warm, collaborative, curious, and culturally responsive. Rather than approaching you as a collection of symptoms, I want to understand you within the context of your relationships, family, culture, identity, and experiences. Together, we may explore how your past connects to what you are experiencing now, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and consider new ways of relating to yourself and others. For clients navigating immigrant or multicultural experiences, I understand that personal growth can sometimes feel complicated by family loyalty, cultural expectations, responsibility, or guilt. I will not ask you to choose between your culture and your well-being. Instead, we can explore what matters to you and how you want to navigate these different parts of your life and identity. I believe that feeling understood can be the beginning of having more choices—in how you respond to difficult emotions, approach relationships, understand yourself, and build the life you want.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. I will ask about your current concerns, important relationships and experiences, personal and family history, cultural background, strengths, and what you hope to gain from our work together. From there, we will collaboratively identify areas you would like to focus on and develop a therapeutic approach that reflects your individual needs and goals. There is no expectation that you share everything at once. We will move at a pace that allows trust and safety to develop within our therapeutic relationship. As our work continues, sessions may involve exploring current challenges, emotions, relationships, family dynamics, cultural expectations, and patterns from your past that continue to influence your present. We may also work on developing greater self-awareness, healthier coping strategies, boundaries, communication, and new ways of responding to difficult situations. Therapy is not always a linear process, so we will continue to reflect on your progress and adjust our focus as your needs evolve. My goal is for therapy to be a collaborative space where you can better understand yourself, recognize patterns, explore new possibilities, and work toward meaningful and sustainable change.
