Getting to know Lauren Garfield

Hi, I’m Lauren! I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Supervisor. I care deeply and laugh loudly. I’m warm and welcoming and playful. I am a real, flawed, authentic human instead of a blank slate. I might be able to spot patterns you might not see and gently challenge you to take steps towards your goals. I work with kids, teens, families, and young adults. I combine support and empathy with knowledge and skills that help you or your child to feel safe to explore your experiences and give you the tools to feel better. I look through a lens of relationships: no one exists alone and I am mindful of the pushes and pulls between people, whether that’s parents and kids, siblings, peers, or partners. I can help you gain awareness of those dynamics and consider the impact relationships have and have had in your life. I’ve worked in varied settings: schools, clinics, group practices, and a residential facility. I trained as a generalist, and have additional knowledge in family therapy and treating OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention. I hold a BA in Psychology (with honors), with a minor in Music, from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I received my MA in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University. I also used to work as a research assistant at Stanford University, helping with studies examining motivation and emotion changes across the life-span. I love to sing, cook, watch movies, do puzzles, hang out on porches even when it’s a little too hot, and watch Golden State Warriors games. I am a wife, a mom, and both a dog- and a cat-person. I’m an “ambivert”— you’ll think I’m an extrovert when you meet me, but I need to recharge with down time. I am a therapist not because I love helping people, but because I love people.
