Getting to know Laurie Payne

Hello! My name is Laurie Payne and I am a Marriage and Family Therapist, licensed since 1997 in California. I have extensive experience working with people who have gone through abuse and other traumatic experiences, and in recent years I've been using EMDR to help people make great strides in their recovery. I also have learned a lot about the importance of attachment work in healing. I work with people with chronic illnesses as well as injuries that have become life-changing. I use a client-centered, strengths-based approach with my clients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to be a warm person who loves to listen, and I don't give much "advice," as I believe you have answers within you about many things. But I am very excited to share any knowledge I might have that can help you to recover as well. Ultimately, I believe it is the relationship between client and therapist that is the key to healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Assessment (first time) sessions are unique in that these involve a lot of information-gathering by me, and there won't be much "therapy" time. But after that session, a typical session involves, of course, a greeting and discussion of your past week, then getting into what is most important for you to discuss. I will try to guide the session to ensure we are staying on track with your goal for therapy, but generally I want your time to be spent on what you need to spend it on. If we are doing EMDR, most of the session will involve the EMDR process which is very different but also rewarding and profitable for healing.
