Getting to know Layne Smith

Life can be messy, parenting teenagers can keep you humble, and none of us have it all figured out. Whether you're seeking support for yourself or your child, my hope is that you'll find a place at 903 Counseling where you feel understood, encouraged, and empowered to move forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you work with me, you can expect a compassionate, down-to-earth approach. I strive to create a space where you feel comfortable being yourself—without fear of judgment. Therapy isn't about having all the answers; it's about having support as you navigate life's challenges. I view counseling as a collaborative process. Together, we'll identify your goals, build on your strengths, and develop practical tools to help you move forward. I draw from evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Reality Therapy, tailoring treatment to meet your unique needs. I work with adolescents, adults, and families, and I have a special passion for helping teens and parents improve communication, strengthen relationships, and navigate difficult seasons. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, behavioral concerns, or simply feeling stuck, my hope is that you'll leave each session feeling heard, supported, and empowered. Your first session is a chance for us to get to know one another. We'll talk about what brought you to counseling, what you'd like to be different in your life, and how we can work together to help you reach your goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every client's journey is unique, but our work together generally begins with an initial session focused on understanding your story, concerns, strengths, and goals for counseling. We'll discuss what has brought you to therapy, what you've already tried, and what you hope will be different as a result of our work together. In ongoing sessions, we'll explore the challenges you're facing while also identifying practical strategies to help you move forward. I use evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Reality Therapy, to help clients develop coping skills, improve emotional regulation, strengthen relationships, and make choices that align with their values and goals. For children and adolescents, I work closely with parents and caregivers when appropriate, recognizing that lasting change often happens when families are supported as a whole. Together, we'll celebrate progress, address setbacks with compassion, and adjust our approach as your needs evolve. My goal is for therapy to feel both supportive and productive. I want you to leave sessions feeling understood, challenged in helpful ways, and equipped with tools you can use in everyday life.**
