Getting to know Leah Schneider

I am a clinical psychotherapist who offers a variety of modalities in order to meet the unique needs of each individual. We develop a professional and positive relationship which helps to allow the healing to occur. We work together as a team to help you work effectively toward your goals, improve symptoms and find meaning and purpose in your life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients describe me as "easy to talk to" and someone they feel safe sharing their concerns with. This is essential because healing won't happen without a basic feeling of care, compassion and ease. I challenge clients to consider perspectives that they may not have considered before that helps them see themselves or their situation in a new light. This perspective shift helps people see a path toward healing. Additionally, and perhaps most important, we learn to honor and respect our emotions. They are meant to inform us but they don't need to control us. There is a proper balance between our emotional states and our logic - two different worlds within us that work best when they learn to respect and align with one another.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start with a consultation usually by phone or sometimes on video or in person. We discuss your concerns and reasons for coming to therapy. We discuss your past experiences with therapy, what has helped and what hasn't. We get a "sense" of one another and see if it feels like a good fit. If so, we schedule our first session. We go more in-depth in this session and learn about how therapy may help and get some idea of the direction we would like to go in. We continue building our work together through talk and other techniques that may be useful of which we discuss beforehand. We make changes as needed as we go along and we discuss this. People seem to benefit most from coming to therapy once a week. If a client is very depressed I will encourage us to speak twice a week until it is reduced enough that once a week is sufficient. Other clients need only come once every other week or once per week depending on their situation and how comfortably they're managing things on their own.
