“I have struggled with intense panic attacks and Anxiety since I was a child. In the first month, Lee taught me coping skills to deal with panic attacks in the moment that reduced their intensity and helped me to snap out of them. Over the 1.5 years I saw him he helped me build up new thought patterns around my triggers to almost completely eliminate panic attacks from my life. He also helped me with my struggle finding meaning and fulfillment in life. He is very kind, understanding, funny (when needed), and an attentive and thoughtful listener. I started seeing lee at a pivotal moment in my life and he has made a profound positive impact on my mental health and quality of life. I am beyond grateful for the help he provided me.”

Getting to know Lee Trometer

You can't catch your breath, your heart is racing, your skin is clammy, and you know once again you're having an anxiety attack you wish would just go away. Perhaps you've spoken with therapists in the past who try to explain all sorts of things to try to tell you why they're happening, but that's much less interesting than just making them stop. I specialize in helping them stop. The fix is rarely a conversation; there are no magic words that stop that wave from hitting us. The strategies that I use are concrete, behavioral, specific behaviors you can use when you start to feel those familiar symptoms, and they work! The first part is recognizing that anxiety attacks are different than panic attacks. Anxiety attacks have a trigger, a known source that you can trace back and find. Panic attacks, on the other hand, happen out of nowhere. You could be walking through Walmart, and then suddenly you can barely breathe, and the unpredictability of when they will happen is part of how we diagnose what those are. The techniques for getting out of anxiety attacks and panic attacks are what I specialize in. Though these are my specialties, anxiety just by itself can be hard enough, and I can also help people with social anxiety, performance anxiety, and similar problems. These skills work here too. I often use somatic therapy to help people. Somatic techniques use your body as the conversation rather than words. There are specific ways to breathe that can make an anxiety attack worse or better. There are grounding techniques that help you to focus on the here and now to remind you that you're safe. I often use the metaphor that our mind is like a time machine - it projects visions of the future and the past that we react to in the present, and we get panicked if we see something scary or intimidating. Part of turning off the time machine and coming back to the present, where we're safe and more or less comfortable, requires us to make our body louder to over

What should a new client know about working with you?

Part of working with a somatic therapist like me is acknowledging that the process may look different than what you expect. Since we're trying to guide your awareness to a calmer place, it might not help to have a deadpan, serious therapist staring you down from across the screen. I tend to keep our sessions on the looser side, not because I don't take your situation seriously, but because the looseness is part of the medicine. Our anxiety can lock us up and keep us rigid, and being able to smile, laugh, and be playful all help to overcome the pressures in our minds and lead them to a calmer, less activated state.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

If you feel like I can help you with what you're struggling with, schedule an appointment, and my office will reach out to you to get intake paperwork sent out, check your insurance, and give you links for the appointment. I typically see people weekly on the time spot that they pick for the intake, though I can be flexible with that. The first session usually involves us collaborating to investigate what's going on, what you're noticing in your experience, and how we might create a plan to help you overcome your symptoms. Thank you for considering me - I look forward to working together!

Lee is great to work with. His patience and insight has been incredible in helping with my mental health. He truly takes the time to get to know you and works with your schedule to ensure you can have your sessions be meaningful and productive. As someone who often has been avoidant in seeking out therapy, I feel like I’ve found someone that I can trust to help and support me. Highly recommend!
Lee is excellent in his use of acceptance and commitment therapy. Lee is thoughtful and nuanced in his approach, able to delicately guide me in exploring difficult emotions and thought patterns. He is exceptional in assisting me to reframe negative thought patterns, allowing me to more easily handle and control my own reactions to difficult or triggering situations. Could not recommend Lee enough!
Lee has helped me through very tough times, worked with me through transition periods as well as cultivating a healthier understanding of myself and my behaviors.
Lee asked insightful questions that prompted me to reflect deeply on my current challenges. I specifically sought a male therapist to allow myself to be vulnerable in front of men and to gain a better understanding of gender differences. Lee’s presence was both calm and confident.
