Lesley Moreno, MA

Lesley Moreno, MA

Psychotherapist
2024 Williamsbridge Rd, Bronx, NY
My training has taken me into rooms that most therapists will never see. I’ve worked on Riker’s Island with incarcerated adults and with children as young as three navigating developmental and behavioral challenges. Those experiences taught me that no matter what someone’s circumstances look like from the outside, the need underneath is always the same. People want to be understood. It’s our most basic, inherent need. Clients tell me I don’t ask cookie-cutter questions from a textbook. I make them feel comfortable talking about their mental health, but also the silly wonders and frustrations of daily life and whatever random interest they’re obsessed with that week. I’m conversational and I refuse to sit across from you like a robot nodding and scribbling in a notepad while you do all the heavy lifting. Therapy with me is a collaborative effort. If you don’t know how you feel or why you did something that’s completely fine and we’ll unpack it together to sort through all the messy pieces. I work with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, major life transitions, relationship struggles, and identity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I help people set boundaries, build confidence, regulate their emotions, and develop communication skills that actually work in the real world. My experience ranges from early childhood developmental work to adults managing schizophrenia, personality disorders, and substance use. That range has made me comfortable sitting with just about anything you bring into the room. I will challenge you in the areas you want to grow in, but I’ll do it with warmth and respect for your story. People close to me say I have this way of saying things that’s either incredibly funny or philosophically witty and that both will make you think deeply. I’m free-spirited, which means I naturally give other people permission to be themselves too. Even strangers end up sharing personal stuff with me, which I think says a lot about the energy I bring into a room. My philosophy is guided by one quote that captures everything I believe about this work – “I am a human being, and nothing human is alien to me.”

What is your typical process for working with clients?

There is no thought, emotion, or experience that’s too much to bring into our sessions. You are composed of all your life’s challenges, successes, and complexities, and none of that is foreign to me.
