Anxiety affects almost everyone, including children. Many children may not recognize the symptoms of anxiety and suffer without the education or background needed to navigate those difficult times. Sometimes parents are unsure how to help their children help themselves. I am here to provide active listening and support. With a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Medaille University, my primary focus is working with ages 5-18, especially those with anxiety disorders such as OCD and generalized anxiety.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My first meeting with parents is a full-length therapy appointment. If a parent is seeking therapy for a younger child, most of this first session is with the parent(s) only. Older children or teens may be in some or all of this first session. I ask parents to please plan to meet with me for 60 minutes for this initial session. The first session is conducted differently than other sessions. This is because parents need time to freely tell me their story. This also allows me to gather additional details about the concerns they mentioned in their initial paperwork, as well as any relevant social and emotional information, and family history. We also discuss goals for treatment and schedule future sessions for the child/teen. After I meet with parents, their child/teen is then invited into part of this first session either with their parent(s) or by themselves. This helps a child feel more comfortable getting started because we can begin to develop a rapport. It’s also a time for me to observe the child/teen, gather any additional information I may need, check for their understanding regarding counseling, address any questions, fears, and concerns they may have, and discuss what our future sessions will look like.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After our first visit, subsequent therapy sessions may be with the child only, or with the parent and their child together. At times, I may also meet with the parent alone to discuss their child’s progress and support them in their parenting. I view my work with parents as a collaboration for the best needs of their child. I partner with parents to determine the frequency of sessions, goals for therapy, and when those goals have been met and it is time to end our work together. Generally, parents can plan for weekly 45 to 60 minute sessions for the first 4-6 weeks after therapy is initiated. At that point, we will usually meet again to check in, review progress and goals, and discuss plans for future sessions. How sessions are conducted and the number of sessions needed will depend on our goals for treatment, the needs of the parent and child, and the child's progress. My goal is to find the best way to communicate with the child/teen to meet their treatment goals. If a child enjoys talking, then most of our time together may involve talk therapy. If a child is under 12, or is older and not expressive verbally in session, then I may use other methods to engage them, such as therapeutic games and activities, play-based interventions, art, and music. If parents ever have any questions about our work together, I encourage them to reach out to me so that we can schedule a time to meet.
