What should a new client know about working with you?

Is your life better or worse than before the pandemic? The drastic changes to society at the start of quarantine caused some people to lose sight of themselves. For others, it was the eroding of their self-confidence that had them give up hope for a better future. For you, it could be a different type of despair that is holding you back from making change in your life. As a video game therapist, I can tell you that there is hope. I help people like you to (re-)discover, accept, and embrace their authentic selves. By understanding your problematic thinking/behavioral patterns plus aligning with your core values, you can enact lasting, positive change in your life. With that said, such a personal transformation will not be without discomfort. In order for me to support you to the best of my ability, you must be willing to face one of the greatest human fears: the unknown. Fear not, as I am not one to leave my fellow warriors alone and unprepared. We will ease into that vulnerability in a way that is not completely overwhelming yet still challenging. As your therapist, my goal is to assist you in overcoming your struggles by teaching you the mental and emotional “weapons” suited for your unique strengths. Furthermore, as a lifelong gamer/geek aficionado, I am used to the trial-and-error grind of “leveling up” one’s abilities. When I say that your self-doubt and fears are no match for my conviction, I do not say so lightly. I have experienced how frustrating it is to continue towards goals that feel futile. Even then, giving up without due diligence is not in my vocabulary. I hold the confidence that, if you choose to embark on your journey with me as your therapeutic guide, giving up won't be in your vocabulary much longer either. Let's forge on together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am an ideal fit for adults and adolescents struggling with neurodivergence and/or poor body/self-image, who also self-identify as a gamer or geek. By interweaving my specialized expertise with your gaming/geek interest(s), I am able to develop unique coping tools optimized for your inherent strengths. This strategy will build up your resilience so you can then face your most formidable "foes". We will incorporate your gaming/geek interests into your therapy as therapeutic tools. In other words, your strong connection to these passions can help you feel more comfortable, understood, and empowered when using them during therapy. Here are a couple examples to give you an idea of what I mean: 1. A client who is battling both ADHD and depression may feel increased confidence and motivation around completing their daily routine if their life’s tasks were translated into the similar “Quest List” of their favorite video game. Thus, we would identify what the tasks are, categorize or break them down into challenging yet personally achievable “quests”, then determine how many and which quests to start completing first. 2. Someone who wants to make more friends with common interests but immensely struggles with social anxiety may find themselves feeling challenged yet reassured to practice their social skills by commenting on a fandom forum about their Marvel idol. Therefore, the client and I would discuss their fears around engaging others online in this manner, gameplan which forum thread to start commenting on, and then “assign” the homework of posting a couple comments or replies on the forum before next session. Essentially, doing hard things in fun, interesting, and individualized ways are much more likely to result in significant and lasting change than insisting on sticking to the status quo of how something is “supposed” to be done.
