Emerald Zhang began her career as a teacher, supporting students of all ages and diverse backgrounds through academic and emotional challenges. Over time, what Emerald found most meaningful was helping individuals feel seen, understood, and supported—this is what drew her to counseling. In the therapeutic space, Emerald values collaboration, open communication, and honest feedback, and she views therapy as a shared process shaped by her clients’ needs and goals.
Emerald’s identity as a mother and a first-generation Asian American immigrant has deeply informed her understanding of how mental health and lived experiences are shaped by intersecting identities. She is particularly passionate about working with first-generation immigrants, women, children, parents, and families. Emerald offers comprehensive support for individuals, couples, and families navigating cultural transitions, parenthood, relational, emotional challenges, and life beyond, while attending to the nuances of language and meaning across both English- and Mandarin-speaking contexts.
Emerald earned her Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her clinical training and approach are integrative, grounded in multicultural, psychodynamic, and relational perspectives, incorporating evidence-based practices such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). As a bilingual and bicultural clinician, Emerald takes a warm and flexible approach, working with clients at their own pace that feels safe.
