Even if this person is not entirely set on treatment, recovery, or whatever it might be, your next steps can decide whether or not that individual returns. Reflecting on my own experience, I often think about the individuals I supported who were actively using substances. They could identify the harmful impacts and want recovery but struggled to get through their initial ambivalence. These types of moments and individuals are deeply important to me. Validation and normalization of this process are huge. It can feel scary to come into treatment. Motivational interviewing helps meet clients where they are, be curious about their goals, and guide them to their next stage of change through conversation. I like using motivational interviewing because it honors autonomy and encourages empathy. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Simmons University, which has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to support clients compassionately and effectively. I'm here for you.
