Getting to know Lina Barbenes

Hello! I'm Lina, a compassionate psychotherapist specializing in complex trauma, anxiety, depression, relational issues, and self-esteem. As an immigrant myself, I bring a unique perspective to my practice, combining professional expertise with personal understanding. I believe in strength-based, culturally sensitive therapy. By integrating family therapy, attachment theory, and psychodynamic components, I help my clients explore their thought patterns and root conflicts. I also incorporate critical race theory, queer theory, and feminist perspectives to contextualize experiences and empower change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is grounded in contemporary psychoanalytic practice with a strong emphasis on collaboration, careful listening, and thoughtful inquiry. I work at a measured pace that allows clients to reflect deeply rather than move toward quick or superficial solutions. My style is steady, attuned, and oriented toward helping people understand the emotional and relational patterns that shape their lives—especially during periods of overwhelm, conflict, or disconnection. Trauma-informed care is central to the way I practice. I pay close attention to the body, to dissociation, and to how trauma can fracture a sense of identity, safety, and agency. My aim is to create a therapeutic space where clients can approach painful material without being rushed, dismissed, or retraumatized, and where difficult feelings can be held long enough for genuine change to unfold. I am particularly interested in questions of identity, migration, language, and the experience of moving between cultures. Working in English, Spanish, and French allows clients to use the language that best conveys their internal experience, and this often reveals important emotional nuances that might otherwise remain unspoken. While I draw from several psychoanalytic and relational traditions, my work remains centered on helping clients understand themselves with clarity and honesty. I focus on the patterns that no longer serve them, the histories that continue to influence their present lives, and the internal conflicts that shape their relationships. My goal is to support a more grounded, coherent, and sustainable sense of self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In session, you can expect a steady, thoughtful pace and an environment that prioritizes safety, clarity, and genuine curiosity about their experience. I don’t expect you to arrive with a polished narrative. Instead, I invite you to speak freely about what brought you in, what you are struggling with, and what you hope might change. My role is to listen closely, ask careful questions, and begin to understand how your current challenges fit within your broader emotional and relational history. The environment I try to create is calm, respectful, and attuned. I aim to make space for complexity without rushing into solutions or interpretations. By the end of the first session, you typically have a sense of my style—steady, reflective, and engaged. My goal is for you to leave feeling that their concerns were taken seriously, that you were heard.
