Getting to know Linda Miller-de Berard

Counseling has been my lifetime calling and passion. I've been in the field for decades and feel blessed to see the wonderful clients I work with grow and heal. As a child of divorce, I understand the importance of keeping families intact and building healthy blended families. I've been married 33 years, so I also know that marriage takes a lot of work. I've raised two amazing daughters and understand what it takes to parent children and build healthy adult relationships with your grown kids. With a Master's in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington, along with my life experience and professional training, I'm confident that I can help you with the most difficult issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

It can be intimidating to start working with a new therapist. I try to be warm and welcoming and make you comfortable while working with me. You will never be pressured to discuss things you aren't ready to talk about. Most importantly, i protect your confidentiality by not accepting insurance. I also work very hard to maintain my neutrality. This particularly important when I work with couples. I don't pick sides or point my finger in blame. I help you find solutions that are tailor made for your relationship.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to have a brief phone call with new clients to find out a little about their situation and make sure that I'm the right fit for them. This gives us the opportunity to get acquainted before your session. With individuals our sessions look a lot like deep conversations with a trusted friend. I'll ask you questions and share what I think might be the most beneficial type of therapy for you. I may also assign handouts or reading material. With couples, I typically meet with both of you together for 90 minutes. After that, you have the option to both spend 45 minutes one on one with me. The three of us will have that discussion at the end of your first visit and together, we decide the next step. During couples sessions I literally ask my couples to face one another while I coach them in a safe dialogue model that will help resolve issues, heal past wounds and improve intimacy. I typically see couples for 6 90 minute sessions and if you do your homework you'll be pleased with the progress you will make in your relationship!
