Getting to know Lindsay Goodlin

We all face challenges in our lives and sometimes we need some extra support to help us overcome them. My name is Lindsay Goodlin and I founded California Therapist in 2017 with the goal of bringing quality therapy to clients all across California - without having to set foot in a therapy office. Through HIPAA compliant video software, I have been providing therapy to Adults and Teens from my home office for the past 7 years (yes, I started pre-pandemic!) and have been working as a therapist for almost 20 years. I moved to the Bay Area (from Toronto) in my early twenties to complete a post-masters fellowship at UC, Berkeley and went on to work in various medical and treatment settings. It was the most exciting and also challenging time in my life. I navigated my career, dating, and relationships; all while facing the same pressures that most of us face today. Now, as a wife and mother to two toddlers, I have an even greater understanding of the feeling of pulled in different directions, competing priorities, and anxieties about living up to high expectations (usually our own). Through my career and personal exploration, I came to discover the incredible benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation. I use a Mindfulness based approach in my work because I have seen it help so many people to be more present, intentional and content in their lives (myself included!). In working with me, you will find that I am compassionate, non-judgmental, direct and honest. I will help you recognize and build up your inherent strengths (yes you have them), give you coping strategies, and help you to make space for more adaptive ways of relating to the world. I am also a big believer in the healing power of humor so don't be surprised if we end up having a laugh every once in a while. You may have noticed that my logo is a Lotus Flower. I chose this imagery to reflect how something beautiful can bloom from even the muddiest waters. I look forward to being a part of your journey!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first step is reaching out and I am so glad you made it to my page! Once you book with me, I will send you your pre-appointment consent forms and ask you for some more information about your self to help me get to know you before we meet for the first time. For our first session, we will talk more about what to expect from therapy and I will answer any questions you may have. I have a structured set of questions I like to ask, but I also leave a lot of space to speak openly about what has brought you to therapy and what feels most important to you. After the first session, we will choose a time for our ongoing appointments. This time will be reserved for you and if you need to make any changes I will always do my best to accommodate. During our ongoing work together, we will discuss your concerns and explore strategies for coping and obtaining the outcomes you want to experience in your life. Therapy ends when you have reached your desired goals. Some people stay in therapy for a short time to do a 'piece' of work, while others stay longer and enjoy the ongoing support. Therapy with me is 100% voluntary and, while I hope you stay and that we are a great match, you will never be required to continue if this is not the right fit. It is always helpful to have a goodbye session.
