Psychotherapist
LA
I grew up in a small town in Sod, WV on a farm surrounded my animals. It was truly my happy place. However, currently I live in Florida with my husband and our dog and cat. We have lived here since 2016. Living in Florida has brought about my new love - the beach. It was a great move for us after my parents passed away. Why did I choose being a counselor? I have always wanted to help others navigate life’s ups and downs because we all have them. Counseling is a wonderful process designed to help individuals and couples work on what they feel is creating issues in their lives. As a counselor, I meet each client where they are and provide unconditional positive regard to each person. Counseling is a journey where each client must be willing to put in the work for progress to be made. I sometimes tell my clients, “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it”. However, making changes is difficult. I do think we can learn to tap into our strengths, alter our thinking about events and ultimately live a happier life. Supporting and helping each person be their best self, while witnessing it happen, is why I love my job. In counseling, I use SFBT, CBT, REBT, and creative interventions to name a few. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Approved Licensed Professional Supervisor (ALPS) since 1998 in WV plus a LPC in LA since 2021, a TLHT Licensed Mental Health Counselor in FL since 2024, a National Certified Counselor (NCC) since 2000, and a Certified School Counselor since 1992. In addition, I hold a Ph.D. in Professional Education from Capella University as well as an Ed.S. in School Counseling from Marshall University, a M.A. in Counseling from Marshall University. I am currently a full-time Professor for Marshall University in the Counseling Department and have been in this position since 2009. Prior to working for Marshall University full-time, I worked for the West Virginia Department of Education for ten years.
