Getting to know Lisa Couser

A down-to-earth, irreverent straight shooter, I prefer therapy to be free of pretense and to be a partnership. Together, we will focus on individual growth and healing rather than diagnoses or one-size-fits-all treatment approaches. I am generally more focused on body integration and nervous system regulation in my therapy style than many, so curiosity about how to get the body on board in addressing trauma, depression, and anxiety will maximize your experience. I earned my Master's in Social Work from the University of Illinois, Chicago, which informs my approach and commitment to accessible, effective care. I am committed to making therapy accessible. If you are underinsured, have a prohibitively high deductible, or you just want to get help without going through your insurance, I may be a good match for your needs and offer a sliding fee scale to keep my services affordable.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work best with adult clients who are curious about their patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Working together, you will be empowered to let your values and life direction guide which of those patterns are helpful and which create unnecessary struggle. As beneficial as sharing your story in therapy may be, traditional talk therapy is not always enough to support the real change you seek. I employ a variety of experiential approaches to support your growth which may be especially helpful in recovering from trauma or loss. Let's arrange a complementary consult to see if we might be a good team.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me will last about 55 minutes. Sessions are patient-driven with regards to content, and my role is thelp us notice patterns and themes within sessions and across them. Sessions will feel very conversational, with room for observations and feddback as we explore together. You will be invited to check in with what is happening at the physiological level and to be supported in learning how your nervous system works, how to build resilience and to feel more embodied, so that the effects from therapy don't get stuck at the cognitive level only. Expect to have your curiosity and imagination piqued as a more integrated sensory and experiential is spronkled into your talk therapy sessions to be able to actual have the direct, felt sense of the change and healing you are looking for within your sessions. If you are familiar with different treatment approaches, I integrate a lot of ACT, Somtic Experiencing and EMDR into my sessions. Patients should expect weekly sessions when beginning therapy that can extend for a few months or longer. Many issues that bring patients to therapy are complex, so therapy is a process of discovery and integration more than a quick fix.
