Most people don't call a therapist the day something goes wrong. They call after months of telling everyone they're fine. Maybe it's anxiety that won't turn off. Maybe it's grief you never got room to feel, a relationship stuck in the same argument, or a stretch of depression where nothing sounds good anymore. I'm Lori Carrel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Acceptance Path Counseling. I work with adults navigating anxiety and panic, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, chronic stress and burnout, relationship strain, self-worth, and the life transitions that leave you unsure who you are on the other side. I use a behavioral-based approach to the mind, which is a long way of saying we won't spend our time trying to talk you out of what you feel. We'll change your relationship to it, so it stops running the show and you can make choices based on what matters to you instead of what you're afraid of. You don't have to have it figured out before you get here. That's the work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The first session isn't a test. You don't need a tidy summary of your life or a clear answer about what the "real" problem is. Most people don't have one. We'll find it together. A few things you can count on. I won't judge what you bring in. Whatever it is, it's very likely something I've sat with before. I'll be honest with you. If something isn't working, I'll say so and we'll change it. You deserve a therapist who tells you the truth kindly, not one who nods along for a year. You set the goals. I bring the structure and the tools. This is a working partnership, not a worksheet and a good-luck wave. And you can move at your own pace. Nothing gets forced. But I won't let us drift either, because you came here for your life to change, not for one pleasant hour a week.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

1. We get the full picture. Early sessions are about your story: what's happening now, what came before, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different. 2. We pick a direction. Together we decide what to work on first, so you always know what we're doing and why. Vague therapy is slow therapy. 3. We do the actual work. That might mean practicing new responses to anxiety, processing something you've carried for years, rebuilding routines that fell apart during a depression, or getting clear about what you want from the people closest to you. 4. We check the progress. Every so often we step back and look at what's changed in your real life, not just how the sessions feel. If something needs to shift, we shift it. Progress isn't a straight line and it doesn't require you to do this perfectly. It just requires showing up, and I'll be right there with you.
