What should a new client know about working with you?

Successful therapy is a result of a collaborative effort between therapist and client. I will take the role of the person who "holds the flashlight" and points to safe places to step along the path of change. The client needs to take the steps towards change. When this feels too hard, we will identify smaller and safer steps. The goal is to create successful experiences which lead to life long positive change and the ability to be a stronger more authentic self. Another role I play is being a supportive witness who hears, sees, validates and accepts the internal experiences you have. Painful experiences find resolution when they are explored, understood and life lessons are gained; this leads to post-traumatic growth and wisdom. We will work together to help you free your core essence by putting down the burdens that create anxiety, depression and experiences of shame.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session always needs to include principles of informed consent so realistic expectations are set for doing therapy. We will explore what prompts you to come to therapy, what your previous experiences with therapy (if any) have been and get a good snapshot of your style of interacting with life. Initial sessions may contain psychoeducational information that build awareness of self and others and give you tools "right out of the gate" so you can start the change process. It is always helpful for you to bring real life examples of challenges (past and present) that we can deconstruct and consider alternative ways of addressing.
