Psychotherapist
1304 Azalea Ct, Ste C, Myrtle Beach, SC
I am Louis D. Murden, a licensed psychotherapist with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of South Carolina and training at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health. I have had the privilege of working for many years in a variety of treatment settings and with people from diverse backgrounds. Modern psychotherapy is blessed with very effective concepts and treatment methods that improve daily life regardless of present circumstances and challenges. It is an exciting journey of exploration, learning, and new skill development for both client and therapist! The journey begins with learning more about how the human mind actually creates emotions—how different parts of the brain “fire and wire” together to form neural networks that perform all the daily functions we must do. The next step is to learn how YOU can directly influence that wiring and rewiring of the brain to create the new, more helpful, and more pleasant emotions desired at this particular time in your life. My job is to share all the amazing things we have learned over time to make that happen! My training includes experience as a counselor in a community mental health center, therapist and treatment director in a substance abuse rehabilitation center, and private practice in a psychiatric medical practice. I am also a Certified Smoking Cessation Specialist for the Duke QuitSmart Smoking Cessation program and offer that treatment in office or virtually.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Psychotherapy is a great opportunity for a person who is experiencing a current life challenge to be paired with someone who really cares about you and has the training and experience to make a difference in your life. We start with a good understanding of your current circumstances, the history that has perhaps led up to this moment in time and then begin to add new learning about how the mind actually creates emotions! It is very important to know that most clients who engage in good psychotherapy can expect to feel much better in a relatively short time as new skills and new perceptions are developed. Those practices over time literally rewire the mind with new habits that become just as automatic as the old, no-longer-desirable habits!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session with me begins with a review of any specific objectives that we have for that particular session and any specific questions you want to address. We will review any homework that you are working on and reinforce the specific learning targeted in that work. Often, we will use diagnostic instruments that help us see the progress being made in the specific areas of work; for example, a Depression Inventory checklist or an Anxiety Inventory checklist if those happen to be two areas that we are focused upon in our current work, or a Practice log if we are working with a prolonged exposure protocol for Obsessive Compulsive concerns. There is always important time to simply talk together and share information, concerns, and viewpoints.
