Getting to know Lucas Somma

The most profound discovery in psychotherapy is that your symptoms have a meaning. Pervasive sadness, paralyzing anxiety, suicidal thoughts, the heaviness on your shoulders are not arbitrary burdens, they are misunderstood messengers summoning you on a healing journey. The distressing problems that bring you to therapy will later be revealed as an unexpected pathway toward a well-lived life. In our work, we will first focus on establishing a sense of stability and safety. From the first session, we'll build a trusting relationship that offers a much-needed space for your concerns. You may find immediate relief simply by having a trustworthy ear to hear. Since profound isolation often accompanies struggles with depression or anxiety, sharing your story with another can be a powerful first step toward alleviation of symptoms. As therapy continues, the underlying patterns that fuel the problems you bring to treatment will begin to emerge more clearly. Clarifying insights then invite us to make changes that honor the totality of your experience; these may range from monumental career or relationship changes to small shifts in your daily routines. I hold the tension of psychotherapy as a practice between science and soul. It is no snake oil: community, storytelling, and self-exploration are the elixirs that gradually lead to healing. I specialize in providing depth psychotherapy for adults with depression and anxiety, as well as helping couples and families with impossible problems. I earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Park University and completed an Advanced Fellowship in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at Depth Counseling. If you would like to learn more about my approach or see if we may be a good fit, please reach out

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first few sessions focus on trying to understand the problems that bring you to therapy while zooming out to the larger context of your story. Then, we will shift to building the kind of relationship that encourages exploration of your inner-world. Over time we will see the problems that bring you to therapy as the unlikely pathways to a more meaningful life.
