Getting to know Lucia Fernandez
Hello! My name is Lucia, and I am a licensed mental health counselor specializing in child development and childhood issues. I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Saint Mary's University. Please, take a moment. How are you feeling today? Perhaps overwhelmed or maybe worried about your child and whether they're happy? That's where I come in. I have vast experience working with children and adolescents, helping them navigate the many challenges they face as they grow and develop. I can support your child in managing unhelpful behaviors, becoming aware of and connected to their emotions, strengthening their coping skills, improving academic performance, and fostering a more positive outlook on life.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I would like to invite you to take the first step and thank yourself for taking care of you and asking for help. Drawing from evidence-based practices and the most up to date research, I will help your child grow and develop into happy, successful, and self-sufficient young adults. With younger kids, I love to play. I always tell this story of when I was in a session with a 5-year-old and he decided we should do a tattoo sleeve with those stick-on tattoos. We asked his dad, and he okayed it. We did it on both of us and had so much fun on our session. Fast forward to that evening and I am out to dinner with my parents at a very nice restaurant in a dress with my arm covered in stick-on tatts. I am very hands on with kiddos and love to leave space for creativity after we get the learning part done. With teens I am very quick to bond with, I am young, I know what is going on in the world, and I’ve had the coolest life so, I am not just pretending to be “cool” :D I also have the utmost respect for you parents and caregivers. I know how much you sacrifice and how much love you put in raising your children. And that is why I do what I do. I can be that little bit of help so that not only your children get additional support, but you get some time to focus on you and your needs as well.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
On our first session, I’ll gather information; history and little quirks. Next, we’ll spend some time reflecting on your goals and together we will lay out the best plan to accomplish everything you want. I’ll get to know your child, their awesome personality, and what makes them strong and resilient. I take an individualized approach, in that each child or adolescent has unique needs and abilities requiring tailored approaches. I use evidence-based practices such as Play Therapy, CBT, Solution-focused, ACT, and Exposure and Ritual Prevention Therapy. I treat a wide array of childhood disorders as well as emotion regulation and impulse-control issues. I also like to incorporate holistic and eastern-based practices like yoga and mindfulness. With my expertise and your willingness to help your child and support them, there is absolutely nothing your child can’t achieve, I truly believe that.
