Luis Cortez, LCSW

Luis Cortez, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who approaches therapy as a collaborative and deeply personal process rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. My work is grounded in psychodynamic and relational principles, with an emphasis on helping clients understand not just what they feel, but why they feel it—and how those patterns show up in their relationships, decisions, and sense of self. I tend to work well with individuals who are thoughtful, introspective, or feeling stuck in recurring patterns they can’t quite explain. Many of my clients come in with anxiety, relationship concerns, questions about identity or direction, or a general sense that something in their life isn’t aligning the way it should. In our work together, I aim to create a space that is both grounded and honest—one where you can explore difficult thoughts and emotions without feeling judged or rushed. Therapy with me is not just about symptom relief, but about developing a clearer, more coherent understanding of yourself and your experience.

Getting to know Luis Cortez

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is conversational, thoughtful, and at times challenging in a productive way. I’m engaged and direct, but never judgmental—I’ll help you explore patterns and perspectives you may not have considered, while still meeting you where you are. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Some sessions may feel reflective and exploratory, while others are more focused and practical, depending on what you need. Most importantly, I take the work seriously. If you’re open to being honest and curious about yourself, we can do meaningful work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first few sessions, I focus on getting a clear understanding of what’s bringing you in—your current concerns, history, and the patterns you’ve been noticing in your life and relationships. This helps us identify where to focus and what might be driving those experiences. Ongoing sessions are conversational and collaborative. We’ll explore thoughts, emotions, and patterns as they come up in real time, while also connecting them to broader themes in your life. Over time, the goal is to help you develop a clearer understanding of yourself, so that change feels more natural and sustainable—not forced.
