“Great listener. Here’s to hoping appointment 2 and onward are even better - with solutions instead of just listening and talk. ??”

“For over 2 years I've had the pleasure to learn about myself and how my habits and shortcoming came about. The self awareness I've gathered is invaluable to me. There is no way to measure the impact that working with Mackenzie has had and will have for many years to come. The attention to detail, the challenges along the way, and the practical frameworks to do the necessary work to get better was evident. I strongly recommend Mackenzie for anyone looking for effective therapy that is forward moving and help one understand their mental challenges and how to overcome them.”

Getting to know Mackenzie O'Brien
I help people cut through the noise. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, trauma, relationship struggles, or just feel lost, my job is to help you stop spinning your wheels and start moving with purpose. I provide existential therapy to those in need. You don’t have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. If you’re feeling stuck, burned out, or just want to work through something with someone who’s direct but supportive, I’m here for that. I offer free consultations and work evenings. I approach counseling from an existential perspective and help people see the benefit of not running from suffering but rather finding meaning in facing it. I believe the goal of counseling should be growth, not comfort. I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from the State University of New York, Oswego, which informs my approach and commitment to supporting meaningful personal development.
What should a new client know about working with you?
My ideal client is someone who feels stuck—not broken, but exhausted from carrying unresolved weight. They're often high-functioning on the outside but quietly wrestling with anxiety, self-doubt, existential questions, or the lingering impact of past experiences. They want clarity, not just coping skills
What is your typical process for working with clients?
I employ solution- focused, cognitive behavioral, existential, and person-centered approaches. My approach is flexible, more conversational for some, and more person-centered for others. Sessions are usually focused on particular client goals, yet our approach can be flexible with client concerns which may change week to week. A normal session is centered around "What would you like to work on this week relative to your larger goals?"

I was never seen by this counselor. My appointment was for 7pm on Zoom with Mackenzie O’Brien. I waited with my laptop at hand for over an hour. I called the contact number for Mr. O’Brien and couldn’t get a hold of anyone. Even left a message… Today is the following day and still no one has contacted me to reschedule for the missed appointment.

Choosing Mack as my therapist was one of the best decisions I've made for my mental well-being. His existential counseling approach provided me with the tools to confront existential dilemmas and live authentically. His support has been invaluable on my journey of self-discovery. I love finally living in the present, unafraid of the judgements of others

Mack helped me through my eating disorders as well as through my past trauma. Over the years I worked with him he gave me tools to face my past and acknowledge how it kept me trapped in the present. Also he thinks he's funny so be sure to roast him back.

I am very greatful to have worked with Mack. He is quite wise and I enjoyed our existential talks. I found the conversations around meaning, freedom, and suffering to be quite helpful when facing life trials. That paired with his problems solving and rational approach often helped me to feel grounded when facing the challenges in life. Thank you Mack, I would recommend you to any and all.

As a women of color I was originally skeptical that as a white man Mr. Obrien would be able to connect with my expirences and thinking and be helpful. I am very greatful to be wrong. Mr Obrien was able to quickly understand my stressors, joys and past expirences and help me use my strengths to confront the areas I was struggling in. He truly is a blessing.
