My adult and teen clients are often perceptive, self-aware, creative, and driven; yet, they struggle with low self-esteem, lack of fulfillment or motivation, and persistent feelings of sadness. Many feel caught in self-destructive behavioral or emotional cycles. Others describe a chronic sense of experiencing life as an outsider-- these individuals are often highly sensitive, intuitive, and prone to emotional exhaustion or overwhelm. Couples and families often come to me amidst loss, transition, or in attempt to repair rupture. I assist couples in cultivating mutual fairness and respect in their marriage, mending harmful cycles of conflict, reaching greater alignment on parenting approaches, and in support of family health following a child's diagnosis of mental health or substance use disorder. I specialize in family reunification following periods of estrangement, early childhood trauma (including abuse, neglect, and parental substance misuse), depression and other mood disorders, blended family and adoption issues, spiritual and vocational concerns, and teen issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with a depth-oriented and relational approach. This means my work with clients is equally thorough (non-assumptive & individualized) and practical (usable & solution-foward). I have extensive training in experiential psychodynamic therapy, and adhere to the research-supported perspective that early familial environments and relationships continue to inform relational styles throughout the lifespan. At the same time, my approach is grounded in systems theory, which takes a usable, practical approach and offers clients tools to begin implementing change immediately in the present. My practice is built on the truth that effective therapy should be equally comforting and challenging. I am skeptical of approaches that rely solely on relaxation techniques and validation without scaffolding real behavioral change. At the same time, I am skeptical of approaches that attempt to bypass deep, emotional change. I often layer evidence-based talk therapy approaches with somatic work such as Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to move clients to lasting, multilayered healing and change. My style is warm, collaborative, invitational, and relational. I have immense respect for my clients and the complex nature of the issues that bring them to therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before beginning therapy, I offer clients a free 15-30 minute phone consultation to ensure that we are an appropriate fit. If I identify in that conversation that we are not a good fit, I will offer referrals to providers who are better-suited. Whenever possible, I encourage clients to attend the first session in-person. This is an opportunity for us to become better acquainted, talk through questions you may have, continue to determine appropriateness of fit, and begin to formulate a plan for treatment. Guided by what presents in the first couple of sessions, I will recommend a course of treatment which we will discuss together. I value the opinions, input, and feedback of my clients, many of whom have already attended therapy in the past and are eager to achieve something different this time. In my work with teens, I typically require that parents or legal guardians be present at the first session, as well as the teen client. There are some exceptions to this policy, which, if applicable, we will discuss prior to our first session. Generally in my work with teens I encourage and sometimes insist upon regular parent participation.
