Madeleine Prowda, AMFT

Psychotherapist
1120 Mckendrie St, San Jose, CA
My name is Madeleine Prowda. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT#14863) working at Unfold Psychology under the supervision of Dr. R. Austin Heafey. I earned a Master’s degree in counseling psychology from Santa Clara University. I also received my Bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Southern California. I work alongside children, teens, adults, parents, and families to help them navigate life's challenges, offering support and treatment for a variety of personal, family, social, and emotional concerns. My work is grounded in a culturally-responsive, developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed perspective. Rather than asking, "Why did you do this?" I find it more helpful to ask, "What experience shaped this response?" I believe that most people are doing the best they can with the circumstances, beliefs, and coping strategies they have developed over time. Together, we explore the thought patterns, life events, and past traumas that influence current behaviors, creating space for greater self-understanding, healing, and intentional change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is customized, compassionate, and client-centered, recognizing that every individual's experiences, strengths, and goals are unique. I believe that effective therapy begins by meeting each client where they are, building a therapeutic relationship that encourages collaboration to develop meaningful strategies that support growth, resilience, and lasting change. Above all, I believe that change occurs when people feel genuinely understood, supported, and empowered throughout the therapeutic process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My first priority is building a strong therapeutic relationship. I believe that meaningful change begins with trust, and I strive to create a space where you feel safe, heard, and understood. While I bring clinical knowledge and experience to our work together, I believe that you are the expert on your own life. Therapy is most effective when we combine your lived experience with evidence-based interventions in a collaborative partnership. Together, we will identify meaningful goals and develop practical steps to help you achieve them. At the same time, I recognize that therapy is not a linear process. As your needs, circumstances, and insights evolve, our treatment plan should remain flexible and adaptable to continue supporting your growth. I also value ongoing feedback throughout the therapeutic process. I encourage clients to share what is working, what is not, and what they would like to approach differently. Your feedback helps shape our work together and allows us to tailor therapy to best meet your needs and support lasting, meaningful change.
