What should a new client know about working with you?
During the last 25 years as a Social Worker, I have been fortunate to have had a variety of opportunities, ranging from administrative/supervision to therapy and case management. I believe that my experiences have led me to being a constant learner in therapy and have given me the luxury of being able to see things from a wide scope. Being licensed as an independent Social Worker in Colorado and Arizona has helped me to develop my practice and to become sensitive to a larger variety of cultures.
My passion lies in the field of trauma and relationships. I believe that people do the best they can in their lives and have so much more strength than they are sometimes permitted to believe. That strength is compounded when they develop social and relational networks, allowing them to create and follow their dreams more assertively. I completely believe that people need the right people in their lives and the way to find that is to explore themselves and the world around them.
My career began working in community mental health, where I helped our clients navigate through the behavioral health and criminal justice systems, and advocated for fair and compassionate rulings, both in practice and in policy writing. I was then drawn into a prison setting where I was fortunate enough to learn much more about the inmate population and the struggles inmates had prior to coming to prison. It allowed me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of trauma and began my work with people who have experienced trauma. Following my time with prison, I have dedicated my learning, and my career, to helping those manage trauma and make sense of the world. My experiences took me to substance use, where my learning continued working in residential and intensive programs. Through all my experiences, I have had the pleasure of working with a variety of folks going through any number of problems.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Going through therapy with a therapist can be a very beneficial experience for individuals who want to work through their mental health challenges and improve their overall well-being. Here are some steps you can take to make the most of your therapy experience:
- Find the right therapist: The first step is to find a therapist who is a good fit for you. Look for someone who specializes in the type of issues you want to address and whose style matches your preferences. I hope I can be that person for you.
- Set clear goals: It's important to have clear goals for therapy so that you and I are on the same page. In our first session, we will discuss your goals and work together to create a treatment plan that outlines the steps you will take to achieve those goals.
- Try to be open and honest with me about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I am here to help you, and I can only do so if I have a clear understanding of what's going on.
- Trust the process: Therapy can be a long process, and it's important to trust that the work you're doing with me will pay off in the end. It's also important to be patient and not expect instant results.
- Practice self-care: In addition to attending therapy sessions, it's important to practice self-care on a regular basis. This may include activities such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.
- Keep an open mind: Finally, it's important to keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. As your therapist, I may suggest different techniques or approaches that you haven't tried before, and it's important to be receptive to these suggestions.
Remember, therapy is a collaborative process between you and me, so be sure to communicate your thoughts and concerns along the way. With the right mindset and a willingness to work, therapy can be a transformative experience that helps you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life.
