Getting to know Margaret (Maggie) Lipham

I am a native Atlantan and I love to shop for bargains, mostly at thrift stores. I have four cats and 1 dog. I own too many craft supplies, think in movie quotes, and believe in radical authenticity. I have been working with people clinically since 2017. I have received training in different types of therapy, including but not limited to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have a particular interest in trauma and dissociation, helping clients to build lives worth living in the face of difficult symptoms. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Human Services from Clayton State University before receiving my Master of Social Work with a clinical focus from the University of Georgia in 2018. I completed two graduate internships, the first, at the Dekalb County Solicitor General's office in the Victim Witness Advocates Office. My clinical practicum was completed at Skyland Trail, a nationally recognized Mental Health Treatment Facility, where I was Clinical Intern on the DBT track. I am dedicated personally and professionally to decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness, expand access to needed mental health services, and patient self-advocacy. I completed my Certified Peer Specialist Training in December of 2016. While I never worked as a CPS, completing my training while in graduate school, I believe that there is not only room for but also a NEED for more clinicians to be open about their own lived mental health experiences. I incorporate this belief into my practice.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe being a human in a room with you is as essential to your therapy being a good use of your time and resources as any of the techniques I learned in school. This means I am direct, probably share more than most therapists you are going to meet, tell more jokes than maybe I should, and cuss like a sailor (because that is me outside the therapy office too). I am not everyone's cup of tea as a friend or as a therapist and that is OKAY. Please try out as many therapists as you need to before committing to seeing one again. There are a lot of super composed and well put together therapists in the world, I am a little bit of a hot mess sometimes...which is what I wish I knew could be true for therapists long before I learned it, maybe a hot mess that is making it work is just the therapist for you. :)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a believer in collaboration as the driving force in the therapy room. I am not the expert, just may have different skills that could help empower you to make your life better. I like to problem-solve, offering ideas that may work great and sometimes may just not work at all for you. That is okay, we will keep trying. Your story isn't over as long as you are still breathing, so let's do this, even if it sucks, let's get you to that better life I know you can create for yourself.
