Getting to know Margo James

Hi there! I'm often referred to as a trauma therapist but work with a wide range of experiences, and my clients know me first and foremost as a humble human being that cares. I'm well aware that the biggest factor in your success is trust. This means that I show up with you in the same way I'd want my therapist to show up with me: results focused and professional in all the ways that matter, but also transparent, authentic, open and honest.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work is centered around a belief that connecting you more deeply with yourself is the medicine you need. There are moments where I'll throw a line of directionality, but more often than not, people just haven't had the space to hear ourselves in the right way. That’s mostly what my work is about: helping you be with what’s alive so that what’s stuck can be released, and what's lost can be found. As you'll see in other areas of my profile, I work with all kinds of people on all kinds of issues - and I thoroughly love my job that way. Intentional forms of talk therapy like Internal Family Systems (IFS) or psychoeducation is something I do quite a lot of. My specialty that I'm very passionate about, though, is Somatic Experiencing: a body-oriented treatment for trauma. This is also a great modality for anybody who knows they are stuck in their head, or is a bit numb as a baseline and wants to engage with their felt experience more. Vaguely speaking, Somatic Experiencing is about inviting you into the felt experience of your body in a way that you may never have felt before - to process all that's been stuck that's been lending to your suffering, or simply to reconnect with All that you are (and not just your wonderful brain). Even when treating unresolved trauma isn't the main focus, I find that incorporating the somatic work into therapy makes it all so much richer. To cognitively learn something is one thing, and to really feel it is another. I have a lot of relevant professional experience prior to starting my career as a counselor, and have sought out very thorough trainings. That's all to say: I take this seriously! My goal is to move the needle with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What will therapy with me practically look like? In our first session together, I like to give you the chance to get to know me. Then, I'll want to know exactly, in detail, what you're wanting from therapy. People often don't fully know, and that's okay - but what I do learn and continue to learn about your goals dictates everything about how we work together. Therapy from there on out could look like so many different things. We might start our sessions with an accountability check-in, or we might dive straight into how hard that work meeting was and letting you be with everything that you stuffed inside. If you are aligned with Somatic Experiencing, I'll be redirecting you to into your instincts and body in a ton of different ways, and you'll be engaging with a lot of emotional and physical processing. Not sure what your version of this might be? That's okay. If you feel the pull, I invite you to set up that first appointment with me and we'll talk through it together.
